American pianist Bennett Lerner's highly praised Complete Debussy series continues with this newly recorded disc. The triptych was Debussy's favored form for his larger works, usually consisting of two slow pieces followed by a fast one. In addition to seven short, mostly late, pieces, this CD presents four such triptychs. The earliest is is the Images (oubliées) (Forgotten Images), composed in 1894 and long forgotten. The manuscript was in the collection of Alfred Cortot, and was not published until 1977. Images, Series 1 begins with one of Debussy's great masterpieces, "Reflets dans l'eau", given a masterful reading here by Lerner. Bennett Lerner is well known as a performer of new music and has premiered piano works by composers including Aaron Copland, David Diamond, Irving Fine, Marc Blitzstein, Paul Bowles, Roy Harris, Samuel Barber and Virgil Thomson. A student of Claudio Arrau, he has lived in Thailand since 1990 and is currently a lecturer in the Music Department of Payap University in Chiang Mai, where he recently produced a two-year-long Debussy Festival.
