BRIDGE 9600

$ 16.99

Renowned classical guitarist David Starobin pays homage to seven leading composer/guitarists of the past two centuries. Virtuosi presents eight previously unissued tracks, alongside remastered versions of five Starobin classics. The album opens with Starobin's torrid reading of Giuliani's popular Grand Overture, and follows with new recordings of works by the 19th century Czech composer/virtuoso, W.T. Matiegka. Included are remastered versions of Fernando Sor's masterpiece, the infectious 7th Fantaisie, and Coste's effervescent "La Cachucha". Starobin's recital concludes with a new recording of the rarely encountered Five Anecdotes, composed by 20th century guitar superstar, Andrés Segovia.

Reviews:

Five stars: Guitarist David Starobin’s masterful celebration of Virtuosi

"In this recital, David Starobin excels on all counts. It’s always the utmost pleasure to experience Starobin’s artistry. He is that rare artist who dispatches virtuoso passages not only with technical bravado, but with an elegance and musicality that realize the music’s full potential. Starobin’s lovely, singing tone and supple, imaginative phrasing bring rewards as well. Gorgeous recorded sound throughout."  Ken Meltzer, Fanfare, July 2024

Five stars: Beautiful and varied collection of guitar music
"Starobin’s playing can be fiery and virtuosic, as in Fernando Sor’s Septième fantaisie et variations brillantes, delicate and transparent, as in W. T. Matiegka’s Sicilienne, or lyrically beautiful and reflective, as in the fourth of Segovia’s Five Anecdotes. Whether you collect this repertoire or are simply attracted to the guitar, this is a richly varied and constantly engaging collection. The recorded sound is superb." — Henry Fogel, Fanfare, July 2024
"The current program begins with a spectacular performance of Giuliani's Grand Overture. No better version has been recorded, with Starobin marrying great virtuosity with a palpable sense of drama. This disc reminds us of what a remarkable artist he is." — Al Kunze, Soundboard, June 2024
