Insects and Paper Airplanes brings together the second, third and fourth quartets from Lawrence Dillon's Invisible Cities String Quartet Cycle, a set of six quartets Dillon has been working on since 1998. These quartets are full of passionate lyricism, bone-rattling power chords, rustic charm, quiet introspection, rollicking humor, and exhilarating virtuosity. The fact that this seemingly limitless font of ideas comes to us in brilliantly conceived reexaminations of traditional forms makes the accomplishment of Dillon's music all the more remarkable. The three quartets are performed by the superb Daedalus Quartet, with pianist Benjamin Hochman joining members of Daedalus for Dillon's What Happened. The Daedalus Quartet can also be heard on Haydn: Six Quartets, Op. 20 (BRIDGE 9326A/B) This project is supported by the American Music Center's CAP Recording Program, made possible by endowment funds from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust and with funds from The Alice M. Ditson Fund of Columbia University.
Reviews:
“This is richly rewarding and a reminder that ‘accessible’ needn’t be simple—or even overtly tonal.” - American Record Guide
“Just when you thought the string quartet may have reached the edge of sonic possibilities, along comes a composer who makes something novel, haunting and whimsical of the genre. Highly recommended.” - Gramophone
“Dillon is lucky to enjoy the advocacy of such an outstanding ensemble as the Daedalus Quartet whose performances communicate dazzling virtuosity as well as a strong emotional commitment.” - BBC Music Magazine
