When Telemann began writing concertos, he already had a solid foundation as a skillful violinist, and among the concertos recorded here are the two double violin concertos in G major. No less a musician than J.S. Bach, then Kapellmeister in Weimar, made a copy of one of them. The concerto for violin and trumpet is the most Italianate of the concertos presented here, and the e minor concerto for recorder and traverso is one of Telemann’s best known concertos. The recordings are by the superb baroque ensemble, Rebel, under the leadership of Jörg-Michael Schwarz. This CD is the latest in a series Rebel has made for Bridge, including the recent, Vivaldi: Venetian Dreams (including the complete op. 10 concertos) BRIDGE 9421.
Reviews:
“This is music-making of ripping vitality and unyielding energy, supported by intelligent scholarship that transcends academics and becomes glowing ensemble. I found the entire disc intellectually and sonically compelling from first to last.” - Audiophile Audition
“A stimulating and superbly engineered release, highly recommended.” - Gramophone
“REBEL delivers exciting performances...dramatic, strongly contrasting interpretations, really fast and really slow tempi, strong dynamic shading and a considerable amount of ornamentation. This is anything but middle-of-the-road. If this disc fails to convince the skeptical listener that these concertos are first-rate stuff then nothing will.” - MusicWeb International
