This recording presents three premiere recordings of Paul Lansky's recent chamber music. "The Long and Short of It" for Woodwind Quintet was inspired by the third movement adagio of Mozart’s Serenade for Winds K. 361, and borrows a throbbing accompanimental figure to generate a powerful 25 minute score. "The Long and Short of It" was commissioned by The Library of Congress and The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. "Talking Guitars" uses the metaphor of a conversation to characterize a dialogue between the two guitars and is performed by the brilliant young guitarists, Jiyeon (Jiji) Kim, and Hao Yang. "Pieces of Advice" was written for William Purvis and Mihae Lee. The suite consists of five “character studies”, phrasing its performance instruction in terms of a posture: “Be Mysterious”, “Be Proud”, “Be Patient”, “Be Annoying”, and “Be Insistent”.
Reviews:
“His music will charm your socks off. The Long and Short of It combines traditional forms and procedures with spicy, piquant harmonies and textures.” - Performing Arts Monterey Bay
“Windscape performs with sensitivity and verve. Jiyeon Kim and Hao Yang both play with exceptional clarity. This is a good addition to Bridge Record’s Lansky series.” - WTJU91.1FM
"Windscape performs with sensitivity and verve. At times one can hear the work's Mozartian roots in their playing. The recording perfectly balances the need for a homogenous ensemble sound and that of hearing each individual voice." — Finding Beauty in Ephemera
