Reviews:
"McDermott plays with tremendous wit, bringing out the geniality and humor of Haydn with great élan. She is an absolute marvel of clear articulation. When you hear her pull back ever-so-slightly on the volume, it’s as if she were directing a small orchestra, so perfect is the effect. In short, an excellent release. — The Art Music Lounge
“Anne-Marie McDermott’s second release for Bridge devoted to Haydn further testifies her masterful affinity for the composer’s style, as well as her ability convey a specific character for every movement in each work.” - Gramophone
“McDermott’s got sublime technique. To hear the ‘roots’ of Beethoven and lots that came after, listen here; there are even hints of what would be boogie-woogie and rock & roll piano amid the unfolding tapestries of simple elegance. Classical fans and neophytes: Here’s one you can agree on.” - ICON (5 stars)
“Ingenious programming on McDermott’s part, this combination of sonatas shows the pianist and Haydn at their best, with a magnificent variety of drama and personality.” - Clavier Companion
“The immediately arresting thing about McDermott’s playing is her speed and clarity. Her fast tempos are as quick as most performers can manage, yet entirely without loss of articulation. Her phrasings are impeccable and artfully crafted to lift in all the most effective places. Even more interesting is the way she brings a kind of retro-romance to Haydn. It’s a beautiful and fresh approach by a supremely gifted pianist who needs to be more widely heard.” - theWholeNote
