Chinary Ung: Luminous Spirals
BRIDGE 9321

$ 14.99

This disc marks Bridge's second volume of compositions devoted to the music of the Cambodian-American composer, Chinary Ung. Ung's music is much celebrated (he is a winner of both the Grawemeyer and Friedheim Awards) yet little known by the general public. In 1980, Ung learned that half his family - three brothers, a sister, and several nieces and nephews - had been killed in Cambodia, and he directed his efforts toward rescuing his remaining relatives. He also began playing music with Cambodian refugee musicians and dancers, touring the United States, even performing at the White House. This period saw Ung composing very little. In the intervening years he has produced an important body of carefully constructed, highly colorful work. This disc features works composed during the past 25 years, performed by the Da Capo Chamber Players, and recorded under the composer's supervision.

Reviews:

“If you want to hear something unique, or if you have a particular interest in Eastern-influenced classical music, this would be a good choice. The sound is quite good, and everything is well played and sung—there isn’t an ugly, tentative, or inaccurate sound here, and this is some very challenging music.” - American Record Guide
