Franz Schreker - Die Gezeichneten “The Stigmatized”
BRIDGE 9400A/C

$ 29.99

"Our times are full of strange things." With these words the beautiful Carlotta Nardi begins her seduction of the hunchback Alviano Salvago in the second act of Franz Schreker’s 1915 opera, Die Gezeichneten (The Stigmatized). It is a scene of tender intimacies and unsettling revelations, of veiled allusions and naked truths – and all couched in music of a supple lyric beauty that has few equals in operatic literature. This complete performance is from the LA Opera's 2010 production of Schreker's haunting masterpiece, starring an international cast of singers, conducted by LA Opera Music Director, James Conlon. With complete libretto in German and English, and annotation by Christopher Hailey.

Reviews:

Die Gezeichneten is full of gorgeous music. Schreker’s time is well overdue.” - American Record Guide

Not only is Bridge’s recording of a good standard, another enticement for those who are interested in acquiring a version, but the leading five singers and the conductor build a performance that presents the opera to its advantage.” - International Record Review

Robert Brubaker handles Schreker’s punishingly high-flying tenor lines deftly, starring as a 16th century Genoese nobleman, a hunchback who attracts a beautiful painter, played with voluptuous restraint by soprano Anja Kampe. Their second act love duet is among the most ravishing stretches of operatic music—an intoxicating brew of fading Romanticism, impressionistic colorings and pungent harmonies.” - NPR

"Starting with the shimmering, churning Prelude, beautifully played, Conlon paces the score excitingly. Sex, art and mortality set on a medieval canvas." - Opera News
