Music of Arlene Zallman
BRIDGE 9323

$ 14.99

Arlene Zallman (1934-2006) was Professor of Composition at Wellesley College for over thirty years, and before that taught at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and Yale University. She was a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music and the University of Pennsylvania. She studied composition with Vincent Persichetti and George Crumb. A recipient of a Fulbright grant in 1959, she was able to study intensely for two years with Luigi Dallapiccola in Italy. This recording presents the first CD devoted to the work of this fascinating and neglected composer. Composer Martin Boykan writes: "Zallman never repeated herself and her technical range is considerable. I hope this CD will stimulate interest in an oeuvre that occupies a distinguished position in the music of our time."

Reviews:

“Zallman’s musical language is quite poetic and lyrical. I enjoyed it and so would you. The performances and recorded sound are excellent.” - American Record Guide

“Everything on this disc strikes me as the work of a composer very surefooted in her craftsmanship. There is a certainty of judgement regarding tempi and dynamics and a sense of structure which is unpedantic yet exemplary; nor is there any doubting the skill with which she sets poetry.” - MusicWeb International
