Franz Liszt: Années de pèlerinage (Complete)
Three discs for the price of two! The American pianist Jerome Lowenthal has been known as a great exponent of Liszt for many decades, performing the the solo repertoire and concertos throughout the world in the most prestigious venues, and with the world's great orchestras and conductors. Now in his late-70s, Lowenthal has taken on the challenge of recording Liszt's great cycle, Années de pèlerinage. In addition to performing the complete "three years", Lowenthal plays the spectacular early version of Les Cloches de Geneva, and the appendix to the "Italian" book, Venezia e Napoli. As a bonus, Lowenthal is joined by his daughter, pianist Carmel Lowenthal, for a rare recording of the four-hand version of Books II and III of Liszt's charming Christmas Tree Suite. These other Jerome Lowenthal recordings are also available on Bridge: Tchaikovsky: The Music for Piano and Orchestra (with the London Symphony Orchestra, Sergiu Comissiona) BRIDGE 9301A/B; and Christian Sinding: Music for Piano BRIDGE 9306.
“For lovers of Liszt, I can assure you that there is some wonderful pianism here.” - American Record Guide
“Jerome Lowenthal has many of the attributes a pianist needs for this music: generous romantic temperament, a flair for rhetorical drama and musical narrative, and a strong sense of line. This set contains many fine performances. There is much to enjoy.” - BBC Music Magazine
