Music of Fred Lerdahl, Vol. 5
BRIDGE 9484

$ 14.99
The four virtuosic performances on this CD represent a number of different phases in Lerdahl’s career, providing rich evidence of the expressive and formal flexibility afforded by the composer's “post-modernism”, though this term hardly does justice to Lerdahl's originality and communicative power. Using what the composer calls “spiral” forms, Lerdahl's music is much admired for examining qualities of recurrence and reminiscence in the course of variations that blossom and expand upon themselves.

Reviews:

The music of Fred Lerdahl (b. 1943) may just be one of America's great secret treasures. With excellent performances and fine sound, this is an album I will return to, and Lerdahl's music I want to explore further.” - Gramophone

This continues to be a welcome series. Followers of new music should not miss any of these.” - American Record Guide

This disc is so striking in its originality and so striking in its unusual use of timbral blends and harmony that I know I shall not forget him again. I will certainly be interested in reviewing anything by Lerdahl that comes along in the future; this is one amazing and original composer!” - The Art Music Lounge
